Gary Whitley, AFCA, SCA
Born: Edmonton, Alberta
Education: University of Victoria
Gary has been a professional artist for over 30 years. He is an Associate Signature Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, and also an Elected Signature Member of the Society of Canadian Artists.
It is important to Gary to have a strong sense of a light source and a feeling of air in his paintings to give a real visual feeling of the third dimension. Subject matter varies greatly, however he particularly enjoys painting florals. The landscapes are a result of many hours on horseback with his wife in a wide variety of terrain - mostly the high country to record scenes off the beaten path few people will have the opportunity to see.

Artist Statement:
For me, painting is an obsession. I have been a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists since 1978 and have been influenced by many of the Senior members through attending countless workshops, and was awarded AFCA status in 1986.
Subject matter, color, composition and perspective are important in any painting; however a pronounced light source and atmospheric perspective are very important in all my paintings. With these two elements, I am able to achieve a sense of the third dimension. I always try to create a real sense of air in my paintings. As one of my mentors put it, “We are painting shapes that have air between them, therefore paint air”.
I have lived in the North Okanagan valley of British Columbia for 22 years and many of my landscapes are of the area, however some are derived from long hours on horseback in remote high-elevation back country that few people have the opportunity to see. My wife and I spend considerable time riding in the summer, all over B.C. and Alberta. My florals are all a result of the extensive flower garden she has created. I also paint subject matter that I simply find interesting.
